Korea's convenience stores 🏪

편의점 means convenience store, made up of 편의 (convenience) and 점 (shop/store). And in Korea, that name is no exaggeration. Not just near subway stations or busy streets, but on quiet residential corners, inside office buildings, next to hospitals, basically anywhere people exist. There are over 55,000 편의점 in Korea, which puts the country among the highest convenience-store-per-person rates in the world!

They're open 24 hours, they sell almost everything, and for a lot of people they double as a kitchen, a bank, and a hangout spot.

Let's look at the language and culture around them!

The big 4 are:

• CU = one of the two biggest chains, easy to recognize by the purple sign
• GS25 = the other giant, blue and green branding
• 세븐일레븐 = 7-Eleven, still very common
• 이마트24 = run by the E-Mart supermarket chain

Most Koreans have a favorite based on the snacks or promotions each chain runs, not brand loyalty in the usual sense.

Once you’re inside the 편의점, some of the more popular things to get are:

• 삼각김밥 = triangle-shaped kimbap, wrapped so the seaweed stays crisp until you open it
• 도시락 = a boxed meal, usually rice plus a few side dishes
• 컵라면 = cup noodles, and every store has a hot water machine sitting right next to them

Bigger locations have a small seating area by the window with stools, sometimes outside too. Students and office workers eat there constantly, especially late at night or between shifts when nothing else is open. With the microwave and hot water machine both right there, you can heat everything up on the spot.

꿀조합 means "honey combo," which is slang for a really good pairing of foods. Regulars have their own go-to combos, and these are some of the most popular:

• 삼각김밥 + 컵라면 = triangle kimbap plus cup noodles
• 떡볶이 컵 + 치즈스틱 = cup tteokbokki with a cheese stick
• 초코우유 + 크림빵 = chocolate milk with a cream-filled bread

Another aspect about 편의점 is that they are always running some kind of deal. You’ll often see these, pretty self-explanatory, stickers all over the store:

• 1+1 = buy one, get one free
• 2+1 = buy two, get one free

Koreans often just say them as numbers out loud: "원 플러스 원" or "투 플러스 원."

Convenience stores also handle small errands that would otherwise mean a trip somewhere else:

• 택배 = package delivery — many stores act as pickup and drop-off points
• 공과금 납부 = paying utility bills at the register
• ATM = most locations have one inside or right outside
• 복사/출력 = photocopying or printing, at select locations
• Tmoney = you can refill your Tmoney (the Korean transit card) at a 편의점 as well
