손이 크다 🙌 Your hand is big?

Let’s say you’re going to a potluck at your friend’s house. As usual, you prepared way too much food, and brought everything with you. As you walk in with an abundance of food, your Korean friend says, with a completely straight face:

“와… 너 손 진짜 크다”

Your Korean friend just told you that your hand is big. You know for a FACT that your hands are very small…what did they mean?? 🤨

All about hands 🙌

In Korean culture, the hand plays a very symbolic and significant role.

Hands are a symbol of hard work from Korea’s traditional agricultural roots to the Miracle on the Han River, to the emotional touch of your mom and relationship with others. It also symbolizes power, that you’ve got what you want right in your hand.

Naturally, you will see a lot of idioms using 손 (hand) when you chat with Koreans. So, today let’s look at some of these idioms, so you won’t have to second-guess what your friend is telling you when they say you have big hands 😃

엄마 손

Let’s start with my personal favorite Korean cookie: 엄마손 파이! That’s right, it’s Mom’s hand pie! It’s a perfect combination of crispiness and buttery flavor all packed into an incredible 384 layers! (Has this turned into an ad for 엄마손 파이?)

Here, mom’s hand (엄마 손) refers to this warm flavor your mom cooks just for you.

엄마 손 always has a special place. When some food tastes just like how your mom made it or you really miss your mom’s food, you can say: 엄마 손맛.

엄마 손맛이 너무 그리워ㅠㅠ = I miss my mom’s food 😭

You might ask, “What about 아빠 손?” It’s not used as much as 엄마 손, but it can also mean your dad’s delicious cooking, especially if the restaurant owner is a man. 아빠 손 can also refer to safety and protection, so often times you’ll see it is used in the context of security products and services.

When Korean’s get sick, especially if you have a little stomachache, Korean moms would gently rub your stomach, and sing a song that says:

🎶“엄마 손은 약손”🎶 = Mom’s hand is medicine

And the next minute, your will actually feel so much better. Your mom’s warm and loving hand performs magic. 🤗

손맛 generally

Without 엄마, 손맛 (hand + taste) refers the ability to make super tasty dishes. It’s usually the best compliment about your cooking skill if someone says “손맛이 좋다.”

However, it’s not only about the cooking skill, but the experience or secret that you only gain from years of practice. You don’t need to measure or time anything, your hand will know everything exactly through muscle memory.

이 식당은 주인 할머니 손맛이 정말 최고야! (This restaurant’s grandma’s cook is really good!)

A little different, but you can also use 손맛 to describe the feeling in your hands. Like, when you are fishing, and the fish finally bites and you FEEL the fish in your hand!

Or you got this incredible mechanical keyboard, and the keys feel just perfect under your fingers when you’re typing.

You can say “손맛이 좋다” to express this satisfaction of your hand feel.

Back to your big hands 🫶

We’ve now come full circle!

You might have guessed based on the context that 손이 크다 (hand is big) means someone so generous that whatever they do, they prepare so much: food, gifts, whatever, they always gotta prepare so much.

우리 엄마는 손이 커서 항상 음식을 많이 하세요. = my mom’s so generous that she always cooks so much for others

The opposite is 손이 작다 (hand is small), that you only prepare so little.

Can you guess the meaning of 손이 맵다 (hand is spicy?). No, no, don’t lick your hand. 🌶️

It means someone who hits very hard. Say, you are playing a drinking game and you lost, so your friend hits you as a punishment for losing (maybe we’ll cover Korean drinking games in a future newsletter). You could say:

야, 너 손이 너무 매워! = Hey, it was a bit spicy! = you hit too hard, it hurts!

It can also mean someone is very sharp and meticulous in one’s work.

Other uses of 손

We have just scratched the surface of what you can say using similar constructions. Odds are that if you attach some adjective to 손이, you’ll probably hit one!

Below are some more uses of 손 and their meanings. Definitely give them a shot!

• 일손이 부족하다 (working hand is not enough) → not enough people to work
• 손이 빠르다 (hand is fast) → to be very fast and skillful at working
• 손이 느리다 (hand is slow) → to be slow and not skillful at working
• 손이 야무지다 (hand is competent) → to be very meticulous, neat, and reliable in one's work
• 손이 맵다 (hand is spicy) → to be very thorough and sharp in one's work; also, to hit surprisingly hard
• 손에 익다 (become used to hand) → to get used to the work, making it feel more comfortable and easy
• 손을 놓다 (to let go of hand) → to stop working on something, either temporarily or permanently
• 손이 놀다 (hand is playing/idle) → to be not working or idle
• 손을 떼다 (to take hand off) → to completely withdraw from a business, project, or field of work
• 손을 씻다 (to wash hands) → to quit a shady business or a negative past for good
• 손에 잡히지 않다 (to not be caught by hand) → to be unable to focus on work or a task because of worry or excitement

Relationships

• 손발이 맞다 (hands and feet match) → to work together harmoniously with good chemistry; to be in sync
• 손을 잡다 (to hold hand) → to cooperate, form a partnership, or make an alliance
• 손을 내밀다 (to extend a hand) → to offer help or to make a peaceful gesture
• 손을 빌리다 (to borrow a hand) → to ask for and receive help from someone
• 손을 벌리다 (to open/spread a hand) → to ask someone for money or help, often out of necessity
• 손을 끊다 (to cut off hand) → to end a relationship or stop doing business with someone

Power and control

• 손에 넣다 (to put in hand) → to obtain or get one's hands on something desired
• 손아귀에 있다 (to be in the grasp of a hand) → to be under someone's complete control or influence
• 손을 쓰다 (to use a hand) → to take necessary measures or pull some strings to handle a situation
• 손을 뻗치다 (to stretch out a hand) → to expand one's influence or power into a new area
• 손을 대다 (to touch with a hand) → to start working on something; to meddle with something; to steal something
