So how old are you, really? 🤔

In Korea, it's pretty common to get asked how old you are, especially when you meet someone for the first time.

Don't be so shocked. It's not because they are rude. It's because in Korean, how you talk to each other changes depending on who's older or younger (use 존댓말 (honorific language) to someone who's older than you!).

If you noticed, Koreans age counting system can be quite confusing. You thought you were born on the same year but they claim to be older than you?

So today, let's learn through Korean age system, and sort out what's going on with 나이 (age) in Korea.

한국나이 — the traditional Korean age

Under this system, you're born at 1, not 0. Everyone then gains a year together on 새해 첫날 (New Year's Day), regardless of their actual birthday. So a baby born on December 30th turns 2 just two days later. It sounds chaotic, but the logic comes from an old idea that time spent in the womb already counts as a year of life, and the calendar year — not the individual birthday — marks growth.

"한국 나이로 몇 살이에요?" — How old are you in Korean age?

"한국 나이로는 서른이에요." — I'm thirty in Korean age.

만나이 — international age

This is the system most of the world uses. You're born at 0, and you age up on your actual birthday. 만 roughly means "full" or "complete," as in a full year has passed.

"만 나이로는 스물아홉이에요." — I'm twenty-nine in international age.

For most of Korea's modern history, 한국나이 was the default in daily conversation, even though plenty of official documents already used 만나이 behind the scenes.

몇년생이세요? — asking for the birth year instead

Because 한국나이 and 만나이 can give two different numbers for the same person, a lot of people just skip the whole debate and ask for a birth year instead. 몇년생이세요? literally means "what year-birth are you," and once you know someone's birth year, you can work out who's older without touching New Year's Day or birthdays at all. 생 here comes from 태어나다 (to be born), tacked onto a year the way English speakers might say "a '95 baby."

"몇 년생이세요?" — What year were you born?

"95년생이에요." — I was born in '95.

This comes up constantly between people who look close in age and are trying to figure out whether they can be 친구 (same-age friends) or need to switch to 존댓말. Same birth year usually settles it on the spot, no matter which month either person was actually born in.

The 2023 law change

In June 2023, Korea passed the 만 나이 통일법 (Age Standardization Act), which made 만나이 the official legal standard across the board. Before that, the country was juggling three different systems depending on context, and it caused real confusion — insurance eligibility, contract ages, even when you could legally drink varied depending on which system a given law happened to use. The law didn't kill 한국나이 in casual speech, but it settled the legal and administrative side for good.

A quick way to keep it straight

If someone asks your age in a legal or official context, answer with 만나이. If an older relative or a stranger on the street asks casually, they're probably expecting 한국나이, and giving the international number can land oddly. When in doubt, just ask for the birth year or ask which one they mean — 만 나이로요, 아니면 한국 나이로요? — nobody will think it's a strange question. 😉
