여름휴가 literally means "summer break," but it carries a specific cultural weight. For most Korean office workers, this isn't a flexible, take-it-whenever kind of break. Companies often set a fixed window in late July or early August — sometimes the whole office shuts down for the same few days. That's why you'll hear people ask:

"여름휴가 언제야?" (When's your summer vacation?)

It's small talk on the level of talking about weather, because everyone is thinking about it at the same time.

피서 means "escaping the heat," and it's the actual goal behind most summer trips. Korea's summer is humid and sticky, the kind of heat that makes staying home unbearable. Popular 피서 destinations include:

• 계곡 (mountain valleys with streams) — families set up mats and coolers right in the water
• 해수욕장 (beaches) — Haeundae in Busan gets so crowded you can barely see sand

A typical family 여름휴가 isn't just lying on a beach. It usually includes:
